The reddish-orange emitting phosphor K2ZnSiO4: Sm3+, which can be used for white light-emitting diode, was synthesized by a sol-gel method, and its phase structure and luminescent properties were investigated. Based on the X-ray diffraction data, the principal crystalline phase of the sample doped a small amount of Sm3+ is K2ZnSiO4 with orthorhombic crystal structure. The K2ZnSiO4:Sm3+ phosphor can be effectively excited by a near ultraviolet source. The emission spectra are composed of four emission peaks under excitation at 403 nm. The most intense peak appears at 605 nm, which is ascribed to 4G5/2→6H7/2 transition of Sm3+. The luminescent intensity firstly increases and then decreases with increasing the Sm3+ content. The optimum concentration of Sm3+ is 7% in mole. The commission international de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of K2ZnSiO4:Sm3+ locate in the reddish-orange region and do not change as the mass fraction of Sm3+ increases. © 2015, Editorial Department of Journal of the Chinese Ceramic Society.
