Italian company Snaico Engineering has replaced the now discontinued pot spun (PSY) with a new viscose yarn. The company specialises in supplying technology, equipment and services for chemical and industrial plants. The multipurpose continuous viscose spun yarn is known as universal spun yarn (USY) to encompass the advantages of both PSY and CSY (continuous spun yarn). Converting existing PSY plants to CSY ones is relatively low-cost, but there are still significant disadvantages associated with continuous spun yarn which are noted. The notable benefits of USY are discussed, including comparisons with CSY and PSY. Usable for knitting and weaving, USY outperforms both CSY and PSY yarn. Snaico are currently developing two new machines to be launched at ITMA 2003, Birmingham - the CSY4 migliorato (an updated CSY 4) and the USY. Factory testing will shortly commence. It is expected that all current Snaico customers in 37 countries will move to the latest available technology.
