Natural convection heat transfer from vertical cylinders is an extensively studied subject. Many references provide a criterion for approximating the heat transfer from a vertical cylinder with a vertical flat plate. This can be done if the boundary-layer thickness of the resultant buoyant flow is small compared to the diameter of the cylinder. This chapter is divided into the following sections: early experimental studies, early analytical studies, and modern studies. Natural convection Nusselt number correlations for round vertical cylinders are presented. © 2014, The Author(s).
