COD removal from concentrated wastewater using membranes

Membranes can be used to remove organic materials of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from wastewater. Eight polymeric membranes (FT30, PVD, DSII, DS, BW30, 37100, 3750 and NF45) were evaluated for COD reduction in wastewater from an alcohol manufacturing plant using reverse osmosis. The flux declined within a short period for all membranes. The best COD removal was achieved using NF45. The NF45 and PVD membranes had the greatest productivity, but neither could reduce the VCOD to a desirable level in a single step.
