The occurrences of blackout have been increasing recently in the world. Safe operation of the power systems is therefore a very-important issue. Appropriate Contingency management is an essential task for the constant and unfailing operation of a power, system. In this paper, a recurrence of severity based appointment of Interline power flow controller (IPFC) is, proposed for the ; protection of the power system during failures. IPFC is positioned on the transmission line with highest probability of severity during ': the various line failures. An IEEE 14 and 57 bus system has been used for the implementation of the planned method. Further tests have been performed under critical conditions by further increasing the load on the highest loaded bus. The results obtained show ; the effectiveness of the probabilistic approach and IPFC in the reduction of severity of the power system. © 2016 CRL Publishing Ltd.
