The present work gives a short and generally understandable introduction to the field of synchrotron radiation. Besides the principle setup of synchrotron radiation sources, it is shown that synchrotron radiation with its high brilliance is a powerful investigation technique for studying numerous questions of materials science. Several current examples of research demonstrate the huge potential of synchrotron radiation in the field of materials science. © 2007, Springer-Verlag.
