This article summarizes the Integrated Electricity Planning (IEP) process, in the context of the 12-country Southern African Power Pool. Use of IEP for long-term planning is described. The article also focuses on decision-making concerning future capacity. Roles and measures that could facilitate the adoption of cleaner technologies in Southern Africa are presented.
