Purpose. To explore the mechanism of β-elemene on colon carcinoma Lovo cell line. Methods. Morphologic changes, supression rate, apoptosis of colon carcinoma Lovo cell line were studied by light microscopy, MTT assay, light and agarose gel electrophoresis and flow cytometry. Apoptosis induced by β-elemene in colon carcinoma Lovo cell line was investigated by [Ca 2+]i was determined by Fura-2 fluorescin load method. Results. β-elemene had a remarkable supression effect on colon carcinoma Lovo cell line. Anticancer effect of β-elemene would be correlation with apoptosis. [Ca2+]i was significantly increased, especially at the initial stage of apoptosis. It is (256.18 ± 8.85)nmol/L at 1 h, which was significantly control (127.81 ± 5.18)nmol/L (P 2+]i play an important role in the process of β-elemene induced apoptosis of colon carcinoma cells.
