Based on traditional hybrid modulation strategy, the selection of DC supply voltage is analyzed for all modulation ratios of hybrid multi-level inverter when no energy flows between cells. Based on the analysis of output voltage fundamental for each unit, a modulation method is proposed: the two lowest-voltage cells are modulated by carrier phase-shift strategy to make their working frequency high, which improves the DC supply voltage ratio of hybrid multi-level inverter when no energy flows between cells and no over-modulation occurs. The modulation signals generated by DSP are sent to FPGA in parallel and the hybrid control algorithm is implemented by FPGA. Experimental results show that, the maximum DC voltage ratios are raised from 1:1:2:4:8: ... to 1:1:3:5:10: ... when no energy flows between cells.
