This work aims at determining the role of the quality of the drillings on the mechanisms of bearing degradation of laminated composites under fatigue loadings. After a description of the phenomena engendering the defects of drilling during the cutting process, the choice of relevant criteria allowing to quantify the functional quality of the surface is discussed. Concerning the fatigue behavior, the experimental setting rests on interrupted tests for various numbers of cycles to realize microscopic observations and 3D surface measurements. The results obtained on different holes qualities are presented and analyzed. © 2014 Lavoisier.
