Process of reduction of fasteners has been considered. It has been shown that reduction is efficient method of improving the mechanical and service properties of the fasteners. However, some factors such as shear deformation in thin surface layer of reduced fastener are not clear. Process of reducing the cylindrical billets from steels of St20 and St35 has been investigated. Hardness of various layer of the billets after reducing has been measured. Variations of hardness and stress have been presented. Variation of hardness corresponds to variation of stress. Obtained results can be used for evaluating the strain strengthening of metal.
