Corus operates nine blast-furnaces on four integrated sites in the United Kingdom-two in northeast England (Redcar and Scunthorpe) and two in South Wales (Port Talbot and Llanwern); the two furnaces at Llanwaren were decommissioned in July, 2001. The blast-furnace expert system developed for Llanwern was successfully ported to Redcar. The initial rule-base, models and system functioned reliably since installation at both sites.
