This paper describes the application of the deep-hole technique to measure residual stresses in thick welded components. Residual stresses were evaluated in three specimens with a wall thickness ranging from 2.36 inch to 4.33 inch. The three components were a fillet welded ferritic steel T-section, a stainless steel Stub-beam welded to a thick section cylinder and a repair welded ferritic steel thick section plate. In all components the deep-hole technique was used to determine the distribution of residual stresses through the wall thickness. The measurements are compared with finite element results for the Stub-beam and the repair weld. There is limited agreement between the experiment and predictions.
