The objective of this study is to test the efficiency of retention of phosphates by adsorption. Two types of activated carbon were used, powdered activated carbon (PAC) and granular activated carbon (GAC). Various reaction parameter effects on the adsorption process where tested. Experiments were carried out with synthetic distilled water solutions. The study shows that phosphates (5 mg/l) retention on 1 g/l of PAC or GAC is reversible. The obtained yields of phosphates removal reached their maximum value (PAC (51.62%), GAC (40.29%)) after three hours. We have also found that the equation of pseudo-second-order is the appropriate model to describe the adsorption kinetics. Yields of phosphate ion removal increased with the increase of adsorbent dosage (0.1 to 4 g/l) for an initial concentration of phosphates equal at 5 mg/l. This adsorption is well described by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The pH of the solutions, affect considerably the adsorption mechanism. Phosphate removal efficiency, on both adsorbent, decreases with the increase of initial phosphate concentration from 1 to 20 mg/l.
