Defect magnetic flux leakage (MFL) imaging technology has been a hot research topic in the field of nondestructive testing technology. It is also an important means of defect detection and evaluation for ferromagnetic component. This paper summarized these techniques in detail from three stages of defect MFL imaging development: defect of leakage magnetic field imaging, defect outline of 2-D MFL imaging, and defect of the 3-D MFL imaging. The commonly used MFL imaging methods in different stages were introduced. Furthermore, the research directions and development trends of defect MFL imaging technology have been discussed. © 2016, The editorial office of Transaction of China Electrotechnical Society.
