A review of Australian's naval shipbuilding is presented. It is suggested that maintenance of competition would lead to efficiencies and higher costs and government and industry should be deciding policies in a Strategic Alliance Entity and implementing them through a Single Shipbuilding Entity (SSE) supported by competing subcontractors. The advantages in developing skills for the high-priority task of being able to repair, maintain and upgrade vessels in country are also elaborated.
