Main lines of research and development activities on using superconductivity in electrical machines and electromechanical energy converters are outlined. General classification of superconducting machines constructed using different superconducting materials is given. The state of the art in the field of developing different types of superconducting machines, such as synchronous, unipolar and bipolar d.c. machines constructed using composite superconductors is presented. New classes of superconducting machines made using bulk high-temperature superconductors are described. The main types of high-temperature superconductors are briefly characterized. Main lines of investigations of cryostating systems for superconducting machines of a new generation are outlined. Potential areas of using superconducting electrical machines for scientific and engineering applications are discussed.
