The takeoff by hydraulic and pneumatic launching (HPL) is an international advanced launching method for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). It is suitable for launching of medium-sized and pint-sized UAV. The foundation is offered for HPL technology on principle experiments. Moreover, the design base is offered for engineering development of the launching equipment. HPL technology is to produce power combining pneumatic energy with the hydraulic transmission, so that UAV can be accelerated to takeoff velocity. The principle experiments are accomplished using a shuttle as the simulation experiment part of UAV. Some parameters, such as accumulator oil pressure, steel cable pull and shuttle velocity are dynamically measured. Results show that the principle of the launch technique is feasible. And the power of the launch equipment can be advanced by increasing oil pressure. The HPL principle is validated in engineering application.
