摘要
Poly[p-phenylene benzobisoxazole](PBO) fiber is a kind of polymer with fibrillar hierarchial structure. PBO fiber can be fibrillated by mechanical force. After this process, fibrillated nano-fiber of PBO of which the diameter can be less than 100 nm was formed. The process and mechanism of fibrillation was studied. The results of SEM show that the process of fibrillation includes three steps: (a) the skin structure falling off, (b)the trunk fiber being destroyed and (c) deeper fibrillation. And peeling and splitting are two methods of fibrillation. There are different sizes of PBO fiber after fibrillation. The diameter of fibrillated nano-fiber of 70°SR can be 50 nm. And its water retention value can increase to 118%, the distribution of fiber length is 0.3~0.5 mm and the specific surface area is up to 21.89 m2/g. Paper-based composites were made through wet forming process with fibrillated nano-fiber of PBO. The mechanical properties of paper-based composites increase with the degree of fibrillation. © 2017, Editorial Board of Polymer Materials Science & Engineering. All right reserved.
