Flexural test and calculation on capacity of reinforced concrete short beam strengthened by CFRP sheets

The flexural tests of eleven reinforced concrete beams strengthened by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets with different span-depth ratios were conducted to investigate the influences of span-depth ratio, ratio of longitudinal reinforcement and amount of CFRP sheets on ultimate load of reinforced concrete beams. The experimental results show that: the failure modes of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by CFRP sheets are CFRP sheets fracture and concrete crushing; with the decrease of span-depth ratio, the ultimate load of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by CFRP sheets is improved significantly; with the increase of ratio of longitudinal reinforcement and number of CFRP sheets, the ultimate load of reinforced concrete short beams strengthened by CFRP sheets is also improved significantly, respectively. Based on the experimental results of this paper and others, the calculation method on flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by CFRP sheets was proposed, which considers the effects of span-depth ratio and can be used to calculate the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete short beams strengthened by CFRP sheets and reinforced concrete shallow beams strengthened by CFRP sheets. © 2017, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures.
