The Association des Industries Forestieres du Quebec (AEFQ) has examined the possible implications of the region's aging pulp and paper sector workforce. The Canadian province has a total of 62 pulp and paper facilities with a workforce of 35,000. Surveys indicate that 20% of the workforce could be ready to retire within five years (40% within 10 years). In addition to an aging workforce, there are limited numbers of individuals graduating from courses linked to the pulp and paper sector. There is strong competition from other industry sectors such as engineering. However, the pulp and paper industry remains confident that it can avoid a shortage in the future workforce as a result of above average salaries, good working conditions and stable employment.
