The economic slump in the US paper industry is expected to adversly affect Sappi, a coated fine paper producer of South Africa, in the first quarter of 2002. The company reported year-end net profits of $263 million for 2001, which was 24% below the profits of 2000. Despite difficult market conditions, the group produced robust results due to geographic spread of the assets of the company. The performance of Sappi Fine Paper Europe in difficult economic conditions was improved by managing fixed costs, curtailing production, and attaining maximum efficiency from operations.
