Experimental study on axial behavior of RC circular columns confined with CC and CFRP

Seven short reinforced concrete (RC) circular columns considering layer numbers of concrete canvas (CC) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets, concrete strength grade and specimen size as the variables, were designed and tested under monotonic axial compression load to investigate the joint working mechanism of CC and CFRP. The test results show that: the CC can work together with CFRP; the CC and CFRP confined RC columns show higher bearing capacity and better ductility compared to the unconfined or CFRP confined columns. The jointly confined concrete strength function is obtained through relationship analysis of the unconfined concrete strength and theoretical confining pressure which is in accordance with the stress analysis of the core concrete part, the CC part and the CFRP part. A parameter λ is defined which can represent the restraint degree of the CC and CFRP to the core concrete, and then the jointly confined concrete strength function f(λ) which only takes the parameter λ as variable is obtained. Compared to the existing test results, it is proved that the function f(λ) is reliable. © 2020, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures. All right reserved.
