The 1999 roundwood and chip consumption of pulp and paper manufacturers amounted to almost 430 million m3, a 1.4% increase over the 1998 level and a 4% increase over 1997's level. Eastern Europe recorded the greatest relative increase in output between 1997 and 1999, almost 10 to nearly 45 million m3. Latin American pulpwood output rose an impressive 12% between 1997 and 1999, to total nearly 50 million m3 in 1999. North America, meanwhile, remained the dominant leader in supply at 186 million m3 in 1999, equal to 43% of output worldwide.
