Pentadyne has manufactured flywheel systems that helps power utilities to backup power through short term utility power disturbances during power generation. The technology was initially developed for hybrid electric vehicle applications, but commercialized as a viable substitute to batteries for supplying power to UPSs. The flywheel converts its kinetic spinning energy into electricity. It can deliver its stored energy much faster than a battery can and the systems have a virtually unlimited cycle life. Flywheel offers high power density, compact design, high efficiency, low maintenance and low aerodynamic drag.
