With the development of computer technology, the research and application of intelligent robot technology is developing rapidly and has become the most popular research direction. In which, wireless remote control is one of the research focus. An intelligent mobile robot is designed based on WIFI technology and OpenWrt Android smartphone operating system to achieve real-time inspection robot, video capture, and infrared obstacle avoidance capabilities. Real-time display of mobile robot around and tracking is achieved via WIFI by an Android smartphone, and a command to the robot would be issued. The robot controller XE160FU microcontroller receives motion commands via UART, and it is also responsible for the implementation of the corresponding robot motion, enabling the robot motion and intelligent avoidance function. Meanwhile, MGPEG compression algorithm is introduced to improve the video transmission efficiency and display fluency on Android smartphones. Copyright © 2016 American Scientific Publishers.
