Poly(arylene ether sulfone)s containing sodium sulfonate groups were prepared by direct polymerization of the sulfonated activated halide using a similar `polysulfone' polymerization conditions. Reaction temperatures were of 190 °C were able to produce high molecular weight in reasonable period of time. Tough film forming membranes with up to 60% of the sulfonated monomer structure were obtained, which would provide good ionic exchange equivalents.
