As the United States enters the new millennium, the electric power industry has more than 1,300 steam-turbine power plants at least 30 years old. With the new deregulated and competitive markets, electric utilities must optimize the operation of these older plants to remain competitive. Steam-turbine generators are the heart of this aging fleet. In some cases, the plants will be replaced. In many instances, it is now more cost effective to upgrade existing steam turbines rather than to replace them with new machines. By using state of the art computer systems, manufacturers can design and manufacture more-efficient blading. This advanced blading technology can be readily retrofitted into existing steam turbines.
