Near-threshold s-wave photodetachment from atomic negative ions in parallel electric and magnetic fields was theoretically and experimentally studied. A fully quantum-mechanical theory based on the electron propagator allowed to calculate the transition rate in combined fields for a thermal ion cloud in a convenient manner, leaving only a single integral to be evaluated numerically. The theory predicted both a loss of contrast in the detachment rate and a shift of the photocurrent maxima towards higher laser frequencies as a consequence of the additional electric field.
