As one of the important energy sources, gas plays an important role in production and life. The development trends in gas industry were investigated and analyzed, such as automation, precision and convenience. At the same time, the challenges such as incomplete data acquisition, incompatibility of information systems, inaccurate operations, and inconvenient user services were pointed out. Based on the investigation and analysis, a digital twin-based smart gas system was proposed, which tightly integrated with digital twin technology in key scenarios, key objects and key services of the gas supply side, the transmission and distribution side and the demand side. The architecture and common key technologies of this system were explained from the physical entity, virtual model, data center, information systems and application service. Furthermore, six types of service solutions in the system were discussed and analyzed, including pipe network design, integrity management, inspection, emergency response, transmission and distribution scheduling and user service. The application practice of the proposed system solution in some gas companies was explained in detail to provide a reference for the development and construction of smart gas. © 2022 CIMS.
