Load model identification using small disturbance data is studied. It was proved that the individual load to be identified and the rest of the system forms a closed-loop system. The impacts of disturbances entering the feedforward (internal disturbances) and feedback channel (external disturbances) were examined analytically. It is found out that load identification was closed loop identification and general external disturbances function as excitation signals thus help improve load modelling accuracy, while internal disturbances play a role in the opposite direction. Closed loop identification can be solved by prediction error method (PEM), provided that some mild conditions were met. These conditions were discussed and implementation of PEM based on a Kalman filtering formulation was detailed. Identification results using simulated data as well as actual phasor measurement unit(PMU) data obtained from Qing Yang substations in Zhejiang province were reported. © 2020 Chin. Soc. for Elec.
