Experimental study on seismic performance of connection between U-shaped concrete-filled steel beam and concrete-filled steel plate shear wall

To study the seismic performance of the U-shaped concrete-filled steel beam connected to the concrete filled steel plate shear wall, two full-scale exterior specimens were tested under reversed low cyclic loading. The length of U-shaped steel inserted in the concrete filled steel plate shear wall was 500 mm and 1 000 mm separately. The mechanical properties and failure modes of the specimens were investigated by trails, their hysteretic and skeleton curves of load versus displacement, strength deterioration and stiffness degradation behaviors, energy dissipation capacity and ductility of the connections were analyzed. The test results show that the typical failure modes were the fracture of U-shaped steel at the root of composite beam, the buckling of the U-shaped steel web and the fracture of connections of concrete flange plate and steel plate shear wall. The peak load increases with the depth of U-shaped steel inserted in the concrete filled steel plate shear wall, but after reaching the peak load, the energy dissipation capacity and displacement ductility ratios of the specimens decrease with the depth of U-shaped steel inserted in the concrete filled steel plate shear wall. The positve displacement ductility ratio of two specimens are 2.69 and 2.50, respectively. After the test, the connections of shear wall and composite beam are basically undamaged, and the connections have good connection performance and good energy dissipation capacity.
