Under the background of vigorously promoting the construction of ecological civilization, it is becoming more and more urgent to rapidly develop clean coalbed methane (CBM) resource to replace coal energy which has adverse influence on national life safety and natural environment. The situation of coal and CBM co-mining and the development trend of its theories and technologies are described through analysis of the development mode and resource production of CBM in China, the development history of CBM exploitation technologies in coal fields, the coordinated development mode of coal and CBM, and the corresponding coal permeability improvement theories and exploitation technologies. Additionally, some suggestions on promoting the efficient exploitation of coal and CBM areprovided. The results demonstrated the necessity to further innovate originally the basic key theories for supporting the safe and efficient co-mining of coal and CBM and to improve some key technologies, such as coal permeability improvement technologies, CBM gathering& transportation and comprehensive utilization technologies, and underground coal gasification-CBM combined production technologies. The research on the discipline cross theories and technologies of coal field and petroleum field and their industrial cooperation shall be strengthened to form advantageous theories and technologies, realize industrial complementary development and establish a novel industrial development model of multi-disciplinary integration. It is recommended to improve national and local policy guarantee systems in the field of coal and CBM co-mining and to encourage coal companies and petroleum companies to cooperate for promoting its large-scale development.
