Retooling the Enforcement of Safety Regulations

On October 1, 2015, the U.S. fl ag cargo ship El Faro sank during a hurricane en route to Puerto Rico from Florida, leading to the death of all 33 crew members. Following investigations, the National Transportation Safety Board and the U.S. Coast Guard’s (USCG’s) Marine Investigation Board identifi ed a number of safety issues contributing to the tragedy.
