Preparation and Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene/Magnesium Oxysulfate Whisker Composites by Solution Blending Method

A series of polypropylene/magnesium oxysulfate whisker (PP/MOSw) composites were prepared via solution blending method, using xylene as solvent, PP resin as matrix and lauric acid modified MOSw as filler. Mechanical property tests showed that the tensile strength, yield strength and impact strength were all greatly increased when the amount of MOSw was less than 5wt%. With the further increase of MOSw content, the tensile strength and yield strength of PP/MOSw composites turned to decline, but still greater than those of composites prepared via melt blending method. The SEM analyses of fracture surface implied that less than 5wt% amount of MOSw was well-dispersed. However, great amount of MOSw easily led to aggregating and had poor compatibility with PP matrix. Besides, Turcsányi equation was used to quantitative calculate the interfacial interaction between MOSw and PP matrix. The results also confirmed that less than 5wt% amount of MOSw led to stronger interfacial interaction. With the increase of MOSw content, the interfacial interaction instead became weaker. © 2019, Materials Review Magazine. All right reserved.
