Based on an empirical study, this paper provides insights into the applicability of different decision support tools for managing global production networks (GPNs). Qualitative models such as frameworks and guidelines currently dominate the planning of GPNs due to their high degree of abstraction. Quantitative models, on the other hand, are suitable for the monetary valuation of specific future scenarios. However, decision complexity and data availability are still significant hurdles for using quantitative models. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
