Fly ash from coal-burning is an almost essential component of concrete mixtures. But with coal on the decline for power production, the concrete industry is looking for alternatives. Concrete pavement durability and service life depend on the selection of quality materials and proper construction practices. SCMs are important ingredients in concrete for pavements—both to improve durability in freezing and thawing exposures and for the mitigation of alkali-silica reaction with some aggregate sources.
