Maturity models help to assess the performance of organisations and processes. The digital transformation has contributed significantly to their dissemination in manufacturing technology. Recent maturity models of environmental sustainability offer companies support for the transformation of resource-efficient and climate-neutral production, but often neglect the specific challenges and potentials of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In this article, criteria for SMEs in such a transformation, especially from an economic point of view, are elaborated and compared in detail with 20 assessment and maturity models from a literature review in order to derive improved models and SME-related research questions in terms of environmental transformation. Results offer the opportunity to significantly increase the benefits for SMEs in the design of future models. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
