New fault diagnosis method for stator winding interturn short circuit in synchronous condensers

Due to the short operation time of the synchronous condensers in the power grid, there are few research on its fault characteristics and diagnosis method. Therefore, a fault diagnosis method based on the phase-angle of branch current was proposed. The mutual inductance between the fault windings and the non-fault windings of the same branch and other non-fault windings after the stator winding inter-turn short circuit fault was fully considered in this method, and the phase-angle between the branch currents of the fault phase was deduced theoretically on this basis. Taking a TTS-300-2 type synchronous condenser as an example, the stator winding interturn short-circuit field coupling simulation model was established by using the finite element platform. The results show that when the stator winding short-circuit fault occurs, the phase-angle between the branch currents of fault phase will increase obviously. This phase-angle augments with the deepening of the fault severity. The features are little affected by the change of fault location and reactive power. Therefore, the phase-angle of branch currents can be used as an effective basis for diagnosing the fault of interturn short-circuit of stator winding of synchronous condensers. © 2021, Harbin University of Science and Technology Publication.
