Experimental Investigation and Numerical Analysis on the Flames of Non-Premixed Methane and Air in a Micro Swiss-roll Combustor

Experimental and numerical study was performed to investigate non-premixed methane/ air flames in a micro Swiss-roll combustor. Six flame patterns were observed in the experiment; namely; single flame; relatively symmetrical twin flames; pulsating flame; obviously asymmetric twin flames; extinction and blowout. The lower limits of nominal equivalence ratio () and methane flow rate (FM) required to sustain combustion were found to be 0.4 and 0.02 L·min−1; respectively. Flame structures were well reproduced through numerical simulation; and the vertical asymmetry of the flame structure was revealed as well. The comparison between the numerical results obtained by considering the gravity or not; demonstrated that the buoyancy effect played an important role in the flow field and flame structure. In summary; the present study provides a deeper insight into non-premixed flame characteristics in micro Swiss-roll combustors. © 2024 Science Press. All rights reserved;
