Service-oriented business models und virtual product development require detailed knowledge about the current state of a physical product. The necessary product data must be transmitted via the internet and requires an instantiated data management at the manufacturer’s backend. The conceptual foundation for this data manegement is the idea of a Digital Twin. This article examines the current state of research in the area of Digital Twins and different interpretations along the product lifecycle. © Carl Hanser Verlag, München.
