In 2016, DaimlerTruck, as a pioneer in the industry, had the vision of CO2-neutral freight transport. At the then NFZ-IAA, a heavy distribution truck, the eActros, was presented to the public as a study. This resulted in a series development of the vehicle including an in-house development of the electric drivetrain. The target was to develop a compact, powerful and efficient drive, carrying over as many existing components as possible available on current series products, which could be used in global vehicle portfolio. On the one hand, the lecture deals with the concept phase showing different drivetrain concepts that were evaluated and respectively arguments to select the final concept of the "Re440" eAxle. The next part deals with the subsequent series development. Summarizing from technical implementation until series production. The Re440 is detailed starting from the vehicle requirements, design, development of the transmission topology and description of the components. An overview of the functionality of the e-axle is given, consisting of a classic rigid axle and its electrical carrier. The electrical carrier represents the compact electric drive unit, including 2 eMachines, an automated 2-speed gearbox and a final drive. Finally, an overview of the worldwide vehicle applications and derivatives of the Re440 is given. © 2023 The Authors.
