Pedestrian mall; also known as car-free zone is an urban commercial street that is dedicated only for pedestrians where most or all vehicular traffic is prohibited. This concept aims at providing better accessibility for pedestrians; to enhance the economic and other social activities in addition to walkability; and to improve the aesthetic attractiveness of the local environment. The continuous decline of the Egyptian street life became evident in downtown’s commercial streets that mostly function as corridors and places for vehicular movement; rather than people. Cairo Governorate in response has carried out some urban interventions regarding converting some of downtown’s commercial streets into pedestrian malls; aiming at enhancing the street life. The research includes a field survey; which covers participant observations; questionnaires and interviews with visitors; shoppers and shop owners to understand their perception to the pedestrianization attempt. The recently implemented pedestrian malls namely as Al-Alfi; Al-Shawarbi; and Al-Sharifeen; are analyzed and evaluated based on concluded theoretical framework/criteria for a successful pedestrian mall that functions as both a corridor and a place for people. The findings include highlighting some principles for the selection of the streets that could be successfully converted into pedestrian malls. © 2020; Cairo University. All rights reserved;
