Synchronizers and multi-plate friction systems (MPFS) are typical shift elements in the drivetrain of ICE and hybrid vehicles (HEV). Also the future drivetrain of passenger cars (PC) or commercial vehicles (CV) will still contain shift elements, for example to realize multi speed functionality, for connect / disconnect applications or as safety clutch. This paper will give a brief overview of currently used methods for validating shift elements. It will further describe future challenges in this field of application. Besides standardized test methods, more sophisticated and well-established test procedures for validating the functional safety of shift elements will be described and discussed. © 2022, VDI Verlag GMBH.
