As a kind of solid-liquid mixed pollutant, municipal sludge may cause certain hazard but still has a huge potential of resource utilization. It is an effective way to achieve harmless treatment and energy recovery using the supercritical water gasification technique for hydrogen production to convert municipal sludge into hydrogen-rich gas fuel. Being a safe, non-toxic, inexpensive and environmentally benign reaction medium, supercritical water has been considered as the most effective technology for hydrogen production from municipal sludge, which can avoid the drying process and directly transform sludge into fuel gas rich in hydrogen and methane. In light of the latest research progress at home and abroad, the technology is investigated in terms of supercritical water reaction conditions, the effect of catalyst on hydrogen production, and the role of water in gasification reaction. Meanwhile, the gasification reaction mechanism is analyzed, and the future development of the technology is prospected, so as to realize the technical requirements of resource utilization, energy utilization and full cycle. © 2023 Science Press.
