Redevelopment of declining industrial areas was an important economic and safety issue in the 1990s in Italy. Since then, a number of redevelopment projects have been carried out. In many cases, the existing factory buildings were regarded as an industrial heritage and were conserved, renovated, and reused continuously. In this paper, we will report the history and program of the Bicocca district in Milan, which is considered to be a successful example of the revitalization of an industrial area, as well as the methods used to preserve and utilize industrial heritage structures. © 2022 Architectural Institute of Japan.
