The miscibility issue is considered to be the top problem in the high-value recycling of waste polymers. In this work, by utilizing a self-made eccentric rotor extruder to supply elongational flow, the structural and properties evolution of PP/PE composites were studied. The effect of the rotation speeds and compositions was analyzed. Through SEM, it is confirmed that the elongational flow can force the immiscible PP/PE blends presenting a novel honeycomb structure. The tensile tests also reveal that PP/PE blends can be compatibilized by elongational flow. Moreover, the relationships between rotation speed, composition and structure, tensile strength of PP/PE blends were established. This work can supply several fundamental knowledge of the physical compatibilization of immiscible polymers, and also can pave a new avenue towards the high-value, low-cost and environmental-friendly recycling of waste polymers. © 2021, Editorial Board of Polymer Materials Science & Engineering.
