Beliefs and attitudes of Barcelona university students towards the central-northern variety of Spanish Data from the PRECAVES XXI project

aEl objetivo de este articulo es exponer los resultados de la aplicacion de la encuesta para medir las creencias y actitudes hacia las variedades cultas del espanol del proyecto PRECAVES XXI a estudiantes universitarios barceloneses de los grados impartidos en la Facultad de Filologia y Comunicacion de la Universidad de Barcelona. El estudio se centra en el grado de reconocimiento de las variedades cultas del espanol por parte de los informantes y en el analisis de las percepciones y valoraciones de estos informantes hacia la variedad centro-septentrional. La metodologia seguida en la investigacion no habia sido aplicada con anterioridad a hablantes nacidos en Cataluna, razon por la cual los resultados del estudio aportaran datos novedosos. Ademas, el analisis que se plantea es pionero en la consideracion de la lengua inicial del informante como factor explicativo de sus creencias hacia las variedades cultas de la lengua espanola y mas especificamente hacia la variedad propia, es decir, la variedad centro-septentrional. Abstract The aim of this article is to present the results of the application of the survey for measuring beliefs and attitudes towards the cultured varieties of Spanish of the PRECAVES XXI project to Barcelona university students of the degrees taught at the Faculty of Philology and Communication of the University of Barcelona. The study focuses on the degree of recognition of the cultured varieties of Spanish by the informants, and on the analysis of their perceptions and evaluations of the Northern Center Peninsular variety. The methodology followed in the research had not previously been applied to Catalan speakers, which is why the results of the study will provide new data. In addition, the analysis proposed is pioneering in the consideration of the informant's initial language as an explanatory factor of their beliefs towards the cultured varieties of the Spanish language.
