Independence, inequality and social mobility in Rio de Janeiro (first half of the nineteenth century)

摘要：
The article takes into account data showing that inequality was rising rapidly in Rio de Janeiro around the period of Brazilian Independence. Alongside this information, the article deals with indirect data on the evolution of free, slave, migrant and freed populations in selected parishes of the city, of its surroundings and of the province. Research on inequality conduces to pay attention to issues related to the progressive rarefaction in the urban center of signs of ascendant social mobility.
