摘要
Background: Tissue engineering is an assimilated discipline that includes manufacturing and natural knowledge in the progress of biological materials to substitute, restore, and recover the role of injured or lost organs. Methods: Cellulose-based scaffolds have indicated distinctive mechanical strength, enriched cell adhesion/growth, multifunctionality, reproducibility, biodegradability, and improved biocompatibility, which make them favorable selections for tissue engineering usages. Discussion: Lately, cellulose-based scaffolds have been utilized to transport and release growth factors to direct stem cell differentiation and healing of injured tissue. The biosynthetic cellulose is perfectly suited to clinical applications for example wound dressings and implant materials. There are also further usages in aesthetic dermatology and cosmetics. Results: Cellulose-based scaffolds are reported to be a great-quality tissue regeneration scaffold for direct use in humans. Though, for future development, their inherent antibacterial, antioxidant, and recovery activity, should be studied. Conclusion: In addition, when the drug is applied for cellulose-based scaffolds, the long-period results of these drug carriers, for example, the biocompatibility and immunogenicity should be confirmed in animal models before the clinical applications. Herein, we will focus on the physicochemical, mechanical, and biological behaviors of the various cellulose-based platforms for numerous tissue regeneration applications. The literature search indicated a substantial body of work investigating cellulose-based scaffolds for tissue regeneration, showing interest in the topic.
